We have 2 50 gal water heaters in the house. One started leaking last year so I replaced it with a Tankless water heater. Now the other one is leaking and I am having a tough time finding a 50 gal LP Gas water heater with a warranty longer than 6 years. HD and Lowes have 6 year heaters all day long but I would like something longer.

This got me to thinking. We would like the tank type heater because we have installed a recirculating pump under the sink of one of the faucets for "instant" hot water on that side of the house. The tankless type of heater could not be used for this type of application because it needs .8 gpm to fire the burner and the recirc pump does less than that.

So, could I install a tankless heater feeding a small (20 gal) tank water heater feeding the house? The tank heater could be used to for the recirc water and the tankless would supply an endless supply of hot water.
