I am redoing some of my walls in the living room and I am thinking of putting 2 or 3 wall sconce lights on my walls. I really like the lighting effect they give.

Anyone have any ideas on which styles they would prefer?
I just happened upon this link, it has a pretty good variety. Once I find one I like, I will go to home depot or lowes and find the one that matches it closest.

At the moment I am kind of thinking of something alone the lines of: http://www.lampdepot.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=354&idproduct=3641

The room is going to have a wood floor. By the way, would you also let me know if your a girl or a guy when you give me your opinion? No offense to you guys, but I know what we think looks good and what girls look good are usually two different things, and I want my house to be attractive to the girls :)

I moved your thread here in the accessories forum...think it fits here better. I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions and good advice too. ;)

BTW: I like the one you picked and I'm a girl. :D There'd be something REALLY wrong here if I said I was a boy huh? (see avatar):D

wall sconces will need to coordinate with other permanent fixtures in the home, like bathroom light fixtures, cabinetry hardware, faucets, ceiling light fixtures, maybe even doorknobs, etc. all of which should reflect the style of the home. these sconces should look as though they were original to the home.

therefore, not knowing anything about your style, i can't comment. although i like the one you've shown. whether it goes with anything is unknown.

I have always had a hard time making my house look comfortably lived in. It always looks, to put it to a word, "crappy". My walls are always bare, and the whole place looks sparce. So I got rid of my ugly uncomfortable couches from the 70s, and two 30.00 book shelves from wal-mart, and im basically starting from scratch and only using items that will look good with the style that I am going to have built up as I go along.

At the moment I am kinda of looking at giving it a vacation home or tiki bar look with lots bamboo type accessories, lots of large and small plants and maybe one of those water features that have water falling down a vertical slide. I want it to feel very relaxing where you want to sit there and do nothing and just relax. But it's also going to be where the TV is, which has 5 surround speakers.

I am still giving it a lot of thought and have not yet decided which look im going for.

The wall scone is too traditional for a 'tiki bar look.' Take a look at tiki lighting at http://www.lampdepot.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=354&idproduct=3641

Tiki decor is great in a tiki bar or on Tiki Island. I doubt if the homes in Tiki, Texas have tiki decor. Of course, anyone can select any decor they prefer. It's just that your tastes will likely change, and you will want to build your decor with a theme that is more practical and longstanding for the sake of your budget.

Vacation decor can mean anything from a beach house to a mountain cabin to a ski retreat. A vacation decor style, once you narrow it down to a specific one, will be the first step in decorating your home. Since you seem to like the tiki decor, you perhaps like the ocean and the decor associated with beach vacation homes?

What style home do you live in? That's another consideration. If, for instance, you live in a two-story brick colonial, then it would be unsettling to walk in and see it decorated as a beach condo. If, however, your home is a cottage style, a beach cottage style decor would be wonderful.

Because you selected that particular wall sconce, it reveals that you may think you like tiki or beach style but that you are more drawn to a style that may be more traditional.

Before selecting a wall sconce, you must also consider where it will go, what will be its function, why you need the sconce to light that particular area, if it coordinates with other lighting fixtures in your home and decor, what colors are being used in the room, and more.

Have you studied lots of sconce styles and picked a style that best goes with your decor? You have already revealed that you have not yet decided upon your decorating style. At this point in time, it is premature to pick a sconce until you make that decision.

Tell us more about your home. Do you own or rent? What style home? What type of floor covering? What type of trim (painted or stained)? Do you get alot of natural light? What pieces of furniture do you have? What style? What colors?

Once you share more information, then perhaps we can narrow down your style. What do you really like? What do you really dislike? What are your favorite colors? What kind of rooms make you feel comfortable and happy?

Type 'decorating styles' in Google and you will find a wealth of info to help you narrow down your style. Casual? Formal? Contemporary? Traditional?
French Country? Tuscan? Swedish? Rustic? Chabby Chic? Tropical Chic? Western? Cottage? These are just a few.

Again, once we have more info, we can help you narrow down your style and help you get off and running with decorating your home so you will not feel that "My walls are always bare, and the whole place looks sparse." And, if there is a place where a sconce is needed, then we can help you pick that too.

Thanks for your very detailed reply. To answer a few of your questions, I own the home. I am in the process of putting in laminate flooring, it looks pretty close to this color and style right here: http://www.hardsurfaces.shawfloors.com/LaminatesDetails.aspx?R=KA024_00716&N=4294966961+4294967018+4294967015&DN=93%2c4%2cDocuments

The color of the walls are still yet to be decided, the only for sure thing is the wooden flooring right now.

When I said vacation home I was thinking more along the lines of a beach front type of home. And yes, I am torn between the traditional look and a tiki lounge look.

I really like the indirect light that floor lamps give which is why I decided to go with some wall sconces.

I am also pondering replacing the cheap white ceiling fan/light combo with one that had large wide blades that appeared to be woven from a reed type of plant (saw it at home depot).

As it stands right now I have no furniture, it's an empty room which I am currently redoing the electricity and replacing some of the drywall on the walls.

I was thinking of maybe going with a dark red, or a festive blue. I think the blue would go good with the tiki/beach theme.

The room is about 19'x11', with an 8'x3' window on the long wall, and about a 4'x3' window next to the entry door on one of the short walls. There is plenty of natural light. I was going to put the sconce lights on either side of the very long window. I plan on putting my television underneath the long window, and lots of large plants on either side of the TV against the short walls, with a recliner and reading lamp also along one of the walls.

I was kind of planning on getting a used reed couch in decent shape from a thrift shop and painting the couch to go with the color of the walls, and making custom cushions to also go with the color theme.

The house itself is a one story, 2bed/1bath with stucco exterior (which I would like to eventually like to replace with a natural vertical wood style of siding).

The kinds of rooms I like are usually dimly, but well lit (no dark corners) (hence the stand up lamps) with comfortable places to sit and converse. I love the kind of light you get from candles, and I am also pondering on placing a gas fireplace in the room.

I am totally open for any and all examples and preferences you have. I am a 28 year old single guy and want to make my house look lived in and comfortable for any friends that I might have over. as it is right now it looks pretty white trash :)

The home sounds lovely. Lots of natural light is a plus. The floor selection is very good.

Here is are articles that may help you plan your beach decor:

Colors are usually soft and muted for walls to convey the feeling of relaxation. Brighter colors are used in art, accessories, and accents. Inspirations are the yellow of the sun, blue of the sky and water, greens from the surf, tans from the sand, and, of course, coral.
