Hey Folks,

About 2 years ago I had a T&P water leak, with the help of this forum I was able to track it to a toilet fill valve that I had shut off because it kept running. It turned out the toilet fill valve was a pressure relief valve/toilet fill valve combo that cost me 50 odd bucks to replace. I had to special order it after going to 3 different plumbing supply stores to find someone who knew what I was talking about. Matter of fact, many of the members here thought I was crazy. Anyway, I'm about to demo the bathroom with the "SPECIAL VALVE" and I wanted to know if a Thermal exp. tank would solve my problem??? If so, what size tank should I get and where on the water heater should I mount it. I notice the tanks at Home Depot said for hot water heat systems only. Thanks in advance for your reply and have a good day. Eric

p.s. The valve is a Watts governor 80 http://watts.com/prod_images/hi-res/Gov-80.jpg

You will be better off with an expansion tank. Those fill valves with relief are OK but a band aid type fix. Watts or Amtrol both make Thermal expansion tanks. Most likely the 5 will be enough for any home.

Hey Ken, I put the tank on the cold water line before the bathroom. I know they usually go on the hot water side of the water heater ,but, being the valve was on the cold in the toilet, I thought I'd follow that logic???? Thanks again, Eric

I have been told thatth eplace for the tank is on the hot side of the water heater but I can't see where it matters all that much. The hot and cold meet inside the water heater and the amount of the expansion can only be a few ounces. If there are heat traps on the water heater they would have to be able to hold over a hundred pounds of pressure for the water not to be able to back out of the heater. I don't think those traps can hold back that kind of pressure. Anyway, glad you got the problem taken care of.

Ken, So far ,so good. If the T&P starts to sprinkle I'll move to hot side. Thanks again for your help. Eric
