The linoleum in the bathroom of our house has a orange tinge, as do the majority of the fixtures/sinks/tub due to years of high iron content in the well water. Recently we put in a water softener with iron remover, and the water has improved greatly.
Anything that can be done to remove the orange cast on the floor?
Thanks, Skyie

If a product like CLR doesn't work, the stain has likely penetrated the wear layer and cannot be removed.

Vinyl is porous and absorbent and very subject to staining. Apply a paste of BarKeeper's Friend or Zud (contains oxalic acid rust remover) and water and let set. Then rub with damp cloth or sponge. If there is no improvement, then the stain is likely permanent.

It does sound like the wear layer has been broken down. I would try twelves suggestion. If that doesnt work. It may be in there for good.
But heres another question for you.....are the areas the whole floor or were older bath mats used to sit?

Good point about the bathroom rug, Doc. After rereading the problem about discoloration of bathroom fixtures and vinyl floor, if vinyl is in the bathroom, unless exposed to water high in iron content, the bath mat could have caused the discoloration. If so, the discoloration from backing on bath mat would be permanent. The BarKeeper's Friend or Zud would be effective on removing stains on bath fixtures, but would most certainly not be efffective on removing the mat's discoloration from vinyl. The problem with vinyl is that it is subject to permanent staining because of its absorbent nature.

Vinyl flooring holds up good for moderate wear but for only relatively short periods of time, if being exposed to a lot of agents or traffic. Linoleum, which is different than vinyl, is made up of natural materials. It has a wear layer, but the choices of patterns and colors are limited. The other problem with the lino. is if it is exposed to high pH agents, as in a laundry room setting. It breaks down the wear layer causing the lineseed oil in the sheet to bleed, causing discoloration.
The mat issue i really havent heard of a solid solution to that issue, other than hanging the mats up after showers and cleaning to allow air flow. The polymers in the back matting, migrate over time into the top layers of the sheet, which also contain polymers. This issue is even present in commerical walk off mats and VCT flooring.
