Old stains are often impossible to remove. Organic stains require an enzyme digester cleaner. Enzymes must be given time to digest stains. Repeat applications may be necessary. Enzyme cleaners are marketed as pet mess cleaners at pet stores and under a variety of names such as Out, OdoBan, Nature's Miracle and others.

It is important not to oversaturate the mattress and mattress be thoroughly dry before making up the bed. If mattress feels dry to touch, it is likely still not dry beneath the upholstery fabric.

A simpler and quicker approach would be to zip the mattress up in a cotton cover. Then, cover mattress with quilted mattress cover that can be taken off and washed as needed. There are also waterproof mattress covers to protect mattresses from accidents.

If mattress is 10+ years old, it is likely time to replace it. It is recommended that mattresses be replaced about every ten years. Protect new mattress as suggested above.
