I have GE Water Softener Model GNSF23Z. I was adding salt pellets to the brine storage tank and the water level in the tank was way over the normal water level. What is the typical reason for water backing up in the brine tank?

I dont know anything about the GE but my Kenmore sometimes does this I shut it down, empty the salt and go through the cleaning/ steralizing procedure in the book

There is a lot of information on diagnosing this problem at http://forum.doityourself.com/showthread.php?t=174318. The excellent animations at http://www.systemsaver.com/morton-website/instructions/index.html walk you through the steps and also explain how the water softener works.

In my case (a GE GXSF39E), I had have repeated situations where the brine tank was half-full after a recharge. I 'fixed' the problem in November 2006, and had the same thing yesterday. The problem is lack of suction at the brine tube connection to the venturi. During the brine cycle, removing the tube and placing the finger on the venturi connection indicates a slight fluttering. Disassembling and re-assembling the venturi restored the suction - the unit is now draining the water from the brine tank.

I am not sure what is wrong with the venturi - I have not seen any dirt or sediment on the components. I did notice that the bottom of the gasket had slight indentations from the venturi channels, possibly because the unit had been overtightened. I am not clear why simply reinstalling everything causes the unit to continue working for some months, but will replace the gasket 'on spec'.

Thanks for the good information and links. The problem was a broken gasket in the venturi so the softener was unable to pump out the brine solution into the bead cylinder. Replaced the gasket and also replaced the gaskets and rotor in the cleaning mechanism. Don't know if the later was necessary, although the rotor was very grooved. Water softener working great.

The usual reason that too much water is in the brine tank is that the water (brine) that was in there wasn't completely sucked out at the last regeneration.

You did well to figure that out and resolve your problem.
