Recently had can lights installed in the kitchen which replaced a 2-tube florescent fixture. Bright idea...why not replace the small 2-bulb fixture in the garage with the florescent. Problem is with the wiring. Box for existing garage fixture has one red wire (w/white paint if that means anything) that is connected to two black wires coming from the fixture. Also has two white from the box that are connected to two white from the existing fixture. Ground is also connected to fixture.

The florescent has one black, one white, and a place to connect a ground. Although I assume I connect the one red from the box to the black on the florescent and the two white from the box to the one white on the florescent, I'm not sure. Can anyone straighted me out?

Your assumption sounds correct.

The red with the white is probably just paint on the insulation.

What ever wires were connected to the old, go to the new.
