I recently moved into a "new to me" house. The previous owner had begun the finishing of the basement...framed and about 60% done hanging drywall. As I am beginning to finish things off, I've run into a puzzling situation...

On the walls on both sides of the basement steps, there are 2 (per side totalling 4) evenly spaced bare romex wires hanging out of a small (~1" dia) hole in the drywall . Each of these wires is roughly a foot above the step and has the word "lite" written near each one. I was able to trace the other ends of the wires back to a switch at the bottom of the steps. Now I assume that these are intended for step lighting....however there is no recessed lighting can or junction box behind the wall.

What type of step lighting would I be able to use that wouldn't require me to remove the drywall and fasten a junction box/can to the studs? Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!!
