I am looking at splitting a pretty big closet (about 8'x10') into a small furnace closet and bathroom. To maximise the space available for the bathroom, I am curious to know how much space does a gas furnace need to be legal and work properly? I was also kinda toying with the idea of putting some of those doors which are just composed of slats in front of the furnace, then putting a small closet in front (just a shelf on top with a hanger for coats). To get access to the furnace you would remove all the clothes hanging on the hanger and then just open the slatted door.
Would that be ok, or would it obviously be against code?

You would have to check with the manufacture about clearances.
