My oil lamp fell and broke on my carpet in the basement. I immediately cleaned the site with my Hoover Steamvac carpet clearer using carpet shampoo and Oxyclean, but the smell is still in my carpet and in my basement. The carpet is less than a year old. Does anyone know how to get this smell out of my carpet?

Mineral spirits should remove the oil (and thus the smell). Put the mineral spirits on a clean, white rag, not directly on the carpet. If you end up with any residue from the mineral spirits, repeat the process with rubbing alcohol.

If you have cushion beneath the carpet, the carpet should be pulled back and affected area of cushion replaced. Liquids tend not only to settle downward but outward 3-5 times or more than affected area on top. Oil in cushion will continue to wick upward through carpet and odor will continue.

Sounds like to me the oil may of spread like twelvepole said...and then the first cleaning may of made it worse off. Oil needs a solvent to break the bonds the oil has on the fiber...oxyclean is a water based oxidizer..basicly it cleans by a controlled bleaching of the fiber. If you can pull back the carpet, i would go that route.

Lamp oil spill in carpet will require removing pad and replacing. Oil in carpet can be cleaned with solvent cleaner, blotting carpet fibers and pulling carpet back to blot the back of carpet. Care should be taken that carpet is not over saturated with cleaner because it can cause delamination of carpet backing. Take care because both lamp oil and solvent cleaner are smelly, flammable, and volatile. Crack a window and run fan to ventilate fumes. Avoid sparks, fire, and smoking.

Would like to add one thing..if you do pull it back leave it up and clean/seal subfloor and let dry for a day or 2 with a dehumidifer if you can.

Good point about cleaning subfloor, as oil can wick up into new cushion. It might even be advisable to seal the affected area with a couple coats of primer/sealer to seal in the oil.
