After completion of final cycle there is about 2" of water remaining in the dishwasher. Why doesn't it drain completely and how can I rectify the problem?

Have you attempted to clean the filter screen at the bottom of the tub? Does your kitchen sink drain properly?
If your kitchen sink is slow to drain, then you have a clog in the line. If it drains fine, then you have a clog in the dishwasher.

I had a similar problem several months ago and it turned out that the drain line was clogged. I had to remove the kick plate at the bottom of the dishwasher, then I could disconnect the drain line. I also disconnected the other end of the drain line at the garbage disposal. Once disconnected I took it outside and blasted the clog out with a garden hose.
