I have a two story cape with a full basement. There is a load bearing wall that goes lengthwise down the middle. The basement support beam is three 2x8s nailed together header style with what used to be three lollies. The guy that lived here before me took out one lolly presumably because it impeaded 1 out of 100 pool shots on the pool table in the basement. I'm glad he left the pool table, but the first week or so I put a support post back where the lolly was because the floor in the kitchen sagged and bounced. The three 2x8s originally had to extend 8' before hitting a lolly, but after he removed one it extended about 16'. Obviously 16' was too much and the big fridge in the kitchen almost 1/2 way beteen was too much weight. I installed a support post that supports 33,000 lbs at 6'6'. It is set at 6'3" before it hits the 2x8s. I read somewhere the screw top post is considered temporary and not up to code unless I weld the screw threads so someone can't unscew the post or turn it upside down and surround the screw in a concrete footing. I installed it in the same place as the old lolly stains on the floor assuming there might be a deeper poured concrete floor under the old lolly. However, even with the post back there is still some give and sag to the floor in the kitchen side of the house only. My solution, given there is already a 8" notch in the cement blocks that leads to the crawl space where the cape was extended and a garage added, is to install a header that will span 13' and end so it really just helps supports the kitchen/fridge and some of the adjacent bathroom on the first floor back of the house. It will be under the fridge about 6' from the rear wall and 3' from the center beam. The floor joists extend from the rear and front wall to the center beam. The center beam with the post installed and my gradual extending of the post probably still sags 1/2", but the bounce when you walk past the fridge bothers me the most. So, can I install this extra beam without a permit, engineer, etc., since it is in theory just extra support and the house as is is up to code as is. For a 13' header I would normally look for a 12" glue lam beam, but given the head clearance, and since it is just extra support, I was thinking two 2x8s with 1" plywood in the middle. Since it will only extend to the middle of the house I figured I would use metal straping, etc., to attach it to each floor joist and keep it secure. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You sound like you know what your doing, so I will make this short and sweet. Your plan for the 2x8's will work just fine. Good Luck
