My furnace started to not come on when the t stat called for heat. As soon as I push the reset it comes on and runs a complete cycle. It started occasionally, but now it is more frequent. I have checked the t stat wires and they are OK. Do I need a new primary control?

check the furnace for soot or other signs of incomplete combustion. then check your oil supply, be sure you have plenty of oil and theres not leaks anywhere that could be pulling air into the lines and losing your prime. the primary control is most likely fine, its another issue thats causing the control to pop the reset. if you cant find anything and it continues to pop the reset then you'll need to call a tech to come out with the proper tools and instruments to check it out.

there are no leaks, but it is very sooty.
Mostly the bottom of the burner ( under where the air intake is)and in the check pipe

if it is sooted you'll need to call someone out for service, the soot indicates incomplete combustion and could be caused by many things that only special tools can diagnose. let someone else look like a chimney sweep

So I should call a chimney sweep rather than a furnace technician?

call a service tech first, let him look at everything and tell you, the tech in most cases will be able to clean the furnace out(may have to return with sootvac to do so) however if the chimney is sooted then a chimney sweep will need be called. getting the furnace working properly is your first concern
