The lights in my bathroom keep going out. The lights are set up with a heating lamp and an ordimary light next to it. They will be on for 10-15 minutes then turtn themselves out. After another 10 minutes or so they will turn themselves back on. Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Sounds like the lights are protected with a thermostat.

What is the max wattage rating for the fixture? What wattage do you have installed? Sounds like the overheat protection of the fixture is kicking in and turning off the lamp. When it cools down the light comes on again.

What joed said. There is a sticker in the fixture that says max lamp allowed, do not exceed that figure. Modern fixtures have thermal protection for people that disregard those warnings. Not so modern fixtures have fireman.

Curious if the fixture is even designed for a heat lamp. Remember, where there's smoke there's fire.

could be that the fixtures have insulation around them and are not designed to be in direct contact with insulation.

My take is that the thermal cutouts are doing their job, and you need to look at what is happening to make them too hot.

too high a wattage lamp,
insulation around the fixture etc.

Yep...sounds like possible overlamping to me. and Thermal Overloads....

So the good news... The fixture and safety items are doing their job.

PITA Yes, But you will be forever gratefull. find the reason and correct it.

Seems it was there was a 3 1/2 inch fan between the heat lamp and flood light that was not working properly. I simply relpaced the fan and no more problems. Thanks for all your help!

Thanks for posting back. Was this a single unit? 2-lamps 1-fan?

yes it was a single unit about 12-14 inches long or so. heat lamp on one side and flood light on the other set up so from the switch you can turn either one on or both. The fan came on when the heat lamp side was turned on. When i looked in checking for max watts I noticed the fan making noise but the fan blade it self was not spinning. Ordered a new one for a buck and some change.
