Good Morning,
We're currently remodeling our bathroom and recently installed a new tub surround. The only problem left is that we kept the original bath tub, but being 30 years old, it is really discolored. Is there anything we can do to whiten it? If not, how expensive is it to have refinished?
thanks,
Hillary

This may sound silly but have you tried bleaching it? In college the tub was really discolored but clean. I applied a paste of Comet with bleach and let it sit for several hours, then scoured it clean. Made a huge difference.

Older tub finishes, such as those on fiberglass or porcelain, over time with years of improper cleaning with abrasives and etching by hardwater minerals, tend to become porous and absorbent of soils, oils, and stains. Soaking in bleach/water or using other household cleaner may temporarily lift stains. Because of the condition of the surface finish, the tub will likely quickly discolor again. There are companies that specialize in fiberglass repair and recoating or resurfacing porcelain tub finishes. There are also companies that specialize in relining older tubs with acrylic and making them look like new. Cost will vary among companies as well as from area to area and among the option selected. It is best to explore all options and get estimates from reputable, licensed dealers.
