I was goofing around with my programable thermostat last night and accidently set it to cool instead of heat, which is a problem since it is about -20 Celcius (near 0 Farenheit) here right now. It was set this way all night but presumeably the air conditioner only ran an hour or two if at all, since it would quickly have gotten down to the set point (about 60 degrees). Have I done any terrible damage to the air conditioner by running it when it is so cold outside? How do I find out or do I have to wait till spring to do so?. Thanks.

If it only ran an hour or so, you MIGHT be ok.. You will have to wait till spring when you start it up when it's warm outside. and see if any noise is made.
That's why I suggest to people to turn off the main breaker for the A/C.
Also, do you have a cover/plywood on top of the unit? If you do I would put a sticky note on the breaker door, saying remove cover on A/C.
