When I bought my 75 year old house, there was already a clawfoot tub in a remodeled upstairs Bathroom. It is used regularly, so presumably the floor is sufficiently strong enough to hold it. My question is: How reliable are the clawfeet? Is there any chance of them breaking or giving way under the extreme weight? This is my first experience with a clawfoot tub. I admit, I am uneasy about it.

I've never seen or heard of any such occurrence. I do service at an old-time hotel that has dozens of them, and never seen the legs break or fall off - and I would’ve heard about it for sure.
And when you think about it, what would be the consequences of a leg breaking? Probably not much. The tub would be wobbly (you'd probably stick a phone book under it) until the leg was restored, and it may cause a minor leak.
