New to forum, posted this initially on Gas Appliances, and was advised to repost here.
I just had a natural gas hot water heater installed. I am a musician and find noise very distracting. The blower on this unit is quite noisy. First of all, since the vent pipe runs horizontally less than 13 feet, at a slight angle but with a 90 degree turn at the end, can I use the heater without the blower? Second, part of the noise comes is a rattling from where the blower unit attaches to the top of the tank. Can I remove the blower and put some sort of padding between the blower and tank and, if so, what would be a good material? Finally, if I wish to insulate above the tank to minimize noise, what would be a good product, and what clearance would be necessary?
Many thanks for any help.

The blower on a power vent water heater can not come off. Removing or disabling it will prevent the exhaust from venting properly.
You shouldn't insulate the blower either. There are air vents on the motor to keep it cool. Placing insulation on it will cause it to overheat.
As far as excessive rattling from where the motor attaches to the tank, I would contact whoever installed or sold it to you. Being it's new, it should be under warranty if there is a problem.
