I was recommended "The principles of Architecture" by Nicholson circa 1841.

http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Architecture-Fundamental-Mensuration-Application/dp/1402171374/sr=1-4/qid=1165948041/ref=sr_1_4/103-1701599-2241437?ie=UTF8&s=books

I have no problem with the classics texts but before I plunk down $25 per volume I'd like to know if this is a well regarded book. Obviously I'm not looking for a whole lot of practical info here. My local county library system does not have this book.

Is this considered the classic of classics or are there any other recommendations?

Thanks

My recent reading of architecture books has not included Nicholson. Peter Nicholson is, however, frequently cited, especially:

Nicholson, Peter. 1793. The Carpenter's New Guide: Being a Complete Book of Lines for Carpentry and Joinery.

_____________. 1809. The Principles of Architecture, Containing the Fundamental Rules of the Art, in Geometry, Arithmetic, and Mensuration. Vols. I-III.

Note the book you see at amazon.com is Vol. III.
