Hello,

I'm about to install airconditioning in a unit, however I'm wondering why fresh air intake is needed, and if it is okay if you dont put it in.

They are not necessary. In most homes, air systems are forced air intakes, which means they recycle house air. The reason for this is because of the increased load (and thus higher energy costs) on the unit to filter and modify outdoor air to heat or cool the house. In climates like florida/texas where it gets extremely hot they are not as beneficial as in milder climates.

You can add one if you like but it is up to you.

Yeah, but what's the point of putting it in then if it's not needed? If I don't put it in then will my house run out of oxygen or something? What's the benefit of putting it in?

Thanks,

Mini

Benefits. Fresh air, positive pressure, dilute odors. Drawl backs. More load, higher electric bills.

Another thing is that your unit will get dustier and dirtier using outside air, and require more cleaning.

I agree with the Con's thing that the guys has said so far. Check with local code to see if they are needed.

If you want fresh air in your home, look into the HRV system.

I have a Honeywell Y8150 system on my fresh air duct, this controls amount of fresh air into my home, and not allow it in at night.

my filter for the air intake has brown discolorations on it and the 5 inch media filter that the air hits next has stains that could best be described as from a home with smokers in it.

my question is, could the exhaust pipes coming from the hot water heater or furnace through the roof be releasing something that is being taken in by the air intake ducts? my media filters previously only had a grey cast overall when dirty, prior to the air intake ducts being added. Now they have yellow brown discolorations in addition to the grey.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, including having to move the air intake ducts to avoid whatever might be coming into play that is causing the problem. I believe it might be happening when the wind is blowing in the direction of the air intake because of the burning eyes and heaviness in the lungs sensation that I feel periodically. Thank you.
