Hello, I am about to have a tub/incloser installed and I will be responsible for re-finishing the walls at the joints. I expect a clean cut opening of about one to one and a quarter inch wide around the entire incloser. The existing plaster/wallboard finish is about one and a half inches thick. What technique should be used to achieve a smooth transition here?

I think plaster will work but you will need to install something for the plaster to key into. probably metal lath. Is there any chance the joint will get wet?

yes. The wall butts to the shower incloser.

Portland cement plaster would be better as it can stand the wet but the Portland cement plaster will not bond to the gypsum plaster so you will have a crack there and besides the wall will likely get wet beyond the 1 1/4". I guess still use plaster and a good sealing paint that will not let the water penetrate.
