How big a router do I need to cut raised paned doors, such as in cabinets and furniture. Will a 2.25 hp machine handle the large cutters or do I need a 3+ hp machine?

2 1/4 will handle most everything, but the big panel raising bits work better with 3. However, if you're doing that kind of stuff, you're probably going to want more than one router anyway. I'd start with a 2 1/4 kit containing both fixed and plunge bases and then add a bigger one down the road when you see the need.
