I am looking for a programmable tstat for a forced air A/C system that is around 40 dollars.

I want it to cycle on and off in short periods to maintain the exact temperature it is set at. Many tstats wait for a half hour or longer before they turn on again, or will let the temp go a degree higher than the set temp and then turn on. I want one that will keep the temp exactly the same, no higher, so that occupied rooms don't get hot.

What should i buy? I don't know which brands to look for.

Look at the Honeywell lines.. I like the Vision, and you can program it to cycle avg 3 times an hour. (depends on outdoor temps)

Also, on the VisionPro, you can program the blower to ON at diffrent time, or Auto, or Circ (comes on ramdom)

The fan does not help as the unit is located above the water heater. After the fan has been on for 20 minutes or more, the heat from the heater causes the air coming out of the unit to be actually warmer than the ambient temp, thus warming the rooms.

I would like something like mentioned above that will cycle a few times an hour to keep the temperature as close to uniform as possible.

Almost any and all tstat have a set up in them. To set the anticipator in them for how long the unit will run. but to set a tstat to go on and off to hold the exact temperature it is set at. Will sure cost you lots of $$$$$ in fuel

So you are saying it will cost more to run the air conditioner if it cycles very rapidly?

I set my current Ritetemp programmable one to a swing of 1 degree, and that's about all i can change. The thing will cycle about every half hour if the temp rises, or 45 minutes to and hour if it remains the same. Is this normal?

Thats for sure. When the unit starts the amp draw on it gos up high for a short time then back down to its run amp draw. So yes it cost less for a unit to run .Than to go on and off in a very short time.
On and off in 30 to 45 minutes is good
