Hello,
Why is it that they always suggest to cover wall or window unit air conditioners (to protect them from the elements) but I never see anybody covering there split unit air conditioner systems outside during the off season? It doesn't make any sense to me. Thanks

Its not the elemets. Its to seal up all the holes that are around window units. They have covers for split system to.

You can find covers at home center/hardware stores for window/wall A/C.
Central air should only have something on top to keep falling ice or leaves out of the unit.. Not wraped up in plastic and duct tape.
