Tools, Sharpening and Power Machinery - random orbit sander - Ridgid, Porter Cable

I'm looking for my first sander and i've decided to go with a random orbit sander. I've seen the Porter Cable 343K and the Ridgid R2600 for the same price with similar specs. The main difference is that the Ridgid is variable (7,000-12,000) while the PC is set at 12,000. Is variable important? I noticed a lot of random orbit sanders are not variable the the ones that are aren't necessarily more expensive. Anyone have opinions or experience with these brands/models/tools?

I've heard good things about the two sanders mentioned. I don't have one yet...but it'll be the Ridgid when I do get one.

PC also has a variable speed model, not sure of the number. I have had PC for years, like them, but they have been bought by B&D, not a good sign IMHO. I suspect their tolls will be cheapened like B&D.

Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking Magazine published their ratings in their 2007 tool guide (I picked it up at Lowes). The Bosch 1295DVS was rated by the editor's as best overall and best value ($78).

Readers gave the Festool ES125 the best rating with the Ridgid R2600 and Bosch 1295DVS coming in second and third. The PC 333VSK came in 4th in the Readers ratings.

I have the Bosch which is variable-speed. Works for me.
