This is my first post. I'm of moderate ability as far as DIY projects go. The Bock 51E oil-fired water heater at my in-laws house is overheating the water (scald risk is very high). I inspected the heater and found a Honeywell L6006A aquastat controller on it. I use a Bock 32E at my own house and thought the L6006A looked out of place since my heater has the Bock-recommended aquastat (L4103A-1142). When I purchased a replacement L6006A aquastat and read the instructions, I noticed all references were to boilers and not water heaters.

This got me wondering what may be going on and I read up on the Bock website to see what they recommend. It seems the L6006A is an "aquastat controller" whereas Bock recommends an "aquastat and high limit controller". The model Bock recommends is Honeywell Model L4103A-1142. Did someone (another DIYER or HVAC contractor) mount the wrong aquastat on the water heater or can the L6006A work as designed to control the water temperature of the Bock 51E?

Should I just get rid of the L6006A and install the controller that Bock recommends?

Thanks for any feedback....
