Issue is gutted the upstairs bathroom and was going to re-glaze the 28 yr old fiberglass on-piece tub/shower enclosure, cost $450. Then I start thinking perhaps better to tear out and replace with a cast iron tub and tile in the surround? I call a couple tub guys and they tell me about $1100 for labor and I will need to cut an access hole in my first floor ceiling to hook up all the drains?? That's bad since it's in the family room. Option 2 was to cut a 12" square hole on the exterior stucco and place an access panel there? I assume this is normal? I thought I could just tear out the tube and re-attach the new one?
Thanks!!

In order to remove the old tub, you will probably have to break it up or cut it anyway, and installing a new one will test your sanity. I would definitely consider a quality reglazing, but get more than one estimate. I know it sounds like alot (even more than the cost of a new tub), but reglazers know what you are up against and price accordingly. The R&R estimate you received didn't sound too much out of line, as the job is a big one, and you don't want to really cut into your exterior wall to install the drain system. It just allows more infiltration points.

There are companies who specialize in fiberglass repair and renovation. Also, there are companies who specialize in relining them with acrylic to make an old tub/shower unit look like new.

Madge, as indicated, there are companies who specialize in fiberglass repair and renovation. There are fiberglass repair kits available, but these tend to be for making small repairs.

We just did a reglaze on sinks, garden tub, shower pan in 2 head shower and accents in shower. Turned out great and cost $928.

Re-glazing is starting to sound better. I got a quote for $1500 to put in a cast iron tub. A Kolher $300 tub. That was only tub and labor and did not include demo or new valves. I can't get a tile guy to call me back, but I am guessing $1500 to float the walls and tile around the tub. $3500+ to replace a tub and tile around it is insane.
