I have an oil buring water heater that's about 15 years old. Just recently, the hot water started running out after about 5 minutes of running it. It doesnt make a difference if I run the shower or just run the kitchen sink for dishes. Before, I used to be able to take a 10 to 15 minute shower and now I cant even get through a quick shower. I turned up the thermostat a little more and it makes the water hotter but doesnt really last much longer. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Thanks for any help.

It is very possible that the dip tube that directs cold water to the bottom of the tank has broken. The best way to tell, depending on the brand is to turn off the unit, drain at least 5 gallons of water out of it and remove the relief valve and look in the hole with a flashlight. You may be able to see the dip tube and tell if it is broken. There isn't much else that could cause your problem. Your oil heater should provide almost endless hot water.

Thanks for the reply. I will take a look at that this weekend if I get a chance. When I do look into it and if it is broken, how hard is it to replace it or can it even be replaced at all? Thanks.

The dip tube should not be difficult to change. It is either part of the cold water supply nipple or inserted into the cold water supply opening. You will have to remove the cold water inlet pipe and play it by ear from there if that is the problem.
