I'm putting laminate wood in my hallway. One of the doorway's branching off the hall is the bathroom which is tiled.

I'd like to use a 4" wide piece of marble for a transition between the two flooring types but am worried about "holding down" the laminate at the doorway.

The marble will be taller than the wood. Should I undercut it with a wet-saw or would that make the "lip" too weak and cause it to snap off in the future when someone put their weight on it?

Thanks

Make that under cut enough to allow expansion, and just enough so the marble actually reasts on the laminate. Now, just don't bond it in anyway to the laminate, and lock it in.

It has been my experience that the undercut lip will break under traffic unless the tile is pretty thick. The laminate is installed over a foam pad and will flex some even with the tile in direct contact with the laminate. Tile is not flex friendly and won't tolerate flexing. You are not actually "holding down" the laminate edge. The transitions are used to protect the edge of the laminate and hide the expansion gap. The transitions provided by the laminate manufacturers work very well, but a rubber transition could be used instead if the manufactured ones are not desired.

You're right. I hadn't thought about how the padding might effect things. It won't flex much but anything is too much.

There goes that idea.

I'll keep looking.

Thanks

Most definitely would depend on how much "meat" you had to work with, and how far / deep the lip would be.

I have undercut inch and a half thick marble entry tiles, for hardwood, with success.
