we are putting in a new bathroom is it neccessary to have green board under the cement board. If the tiles are going up 5 feet over the floor and bathtub, can I just use cement board on the bottom and green board on the overwall?

Just put up the cement board (CBU) and the green board above that. You should put up a vapor barrier (4mil Plastic min.) between the CBU and studs. This will protect your studs if moisture gets through the CBU. If you have insulation with paper backing, cut slits in the paper before you install the vapor barrier.

xxxxxxxxxxxxx.xxx sells how-to guides for that type of thing. I like them because they use slightly different methods with the goal of keeping toxins out of the property.
