Specifics: Kohler 14 hp on JD 140. Engine is 1974 . Runs strong, does not smoke.Specs. K321AS- Spec#-60247d-Ser#-6053003.
I turned on the mower PTO,engine rpm fell off.Engine will idle OK, but when throttle is increased,engine runs REAL rough and a pinging sound is heard.I have: replaced spark plug. Cleaned the gas tank. removed the jets from the carb and sprayed carb cleaner, and then gently blew the ports out. disconnected the pto switch.. Engine starts fine. Thanks for the help

Sounds to me like you need to replace the points, or at least clean and set them. I think the gap is too small. The points are under a small rectangular cover on the side of the engine. They should be set to .020" with engine at top dead center.

I replaced the points and that cleared the problem up immediately.
