I have a small submersible pump in a water feature in my yard. The pump motor comes on but the impeller won't start spinning without a little nudge and then the pump works fine. But it won't start unless I give the impeller a little spin like an old time airplane. Any ideas?

There is probably a start capacitor that is bad. The capacitor gives the motor an extra shot of power to get it going.
I would recommend that you get another pump. Many submersibles have oil in them, and electrical parts can be very difficult to replace.

These pumps usually need a capacitor to get started. My diagnosis would be a faulty capacitor which is located inside, usually on top where the cable enters. Can be replaced but care must be taken to re-seal the housing properly. (lube O-rings, inspect/replace gaskets. etc.)
