I am about to install hardwood on our second floor. The subfloor is 3/4 exterior plywood and I was wondering if I need any underlay. The guy at the flooring store said all I need is this black paper stuff and not proper underlay. Is that true?

Assuming a 3/4" floor, 15# felt or rosin paper(pink stuff) are both ok. No need for anything else. The paper isolates the two woods and reduces squeaking problems.

Just in case you want a second opinion, Just Bill and the store are correct. The pad underlayment you may be thinking about is for floating floors, not full 3/4 hardwood.
