I'm getting ready to install t&g 3/4" oak in the kitchen. The vinyl "linuleum" is in good condition.
question is; can i just put the wood directly over it?
will be nailed down with 2" staples.

seems just as good as tar paper??????

thanks David

I have just completed the same job in our house. Lino in hallway connecting front door to kitchen which also shared same lino in dining room , living room had carpet which i removed and added extra 3/4 inch plywood. All the lino was in good condition. I nailed er down using 2 inch cleat nails which I know went through the lino and well into the subfloor. I used rosin paper over the new plywood in the living room. Obviously I cannot answe in full confidence for a couple of years, but I don't lose any sleep at night over it. Sure beats ripping out good lino and the work that entails. Regards Reno Lenny

As long as you have plywood or OSB beneath the floor covering, you should be good to go with nailing hardwood floor. Flooring cleats are recommended for 3/4" solid hardwood installation. Go to www.nofma.org and click publications to download for free the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association technical manual for hardwood installation.
