I am trying to thread a 1/8-inch diameter brass rod. I have a die and the double-handle thing (I just went blank on what it is called) that the die goes into. Last year I used the tool and threaded a rod, but this year it isn't working. I don't know what I am doing differently this year. Which direction do you turn the die? What else could I be missing?

You sure that you are try to start the die on the right side???? Turn the die on the rod like a clock goes CW.

That's a good question and I was wondering about that. But one side of the die has a little larger opening than the other side. The rod will just fit into the larger side and won't fit at all into the other. Do you have to put any pressure on it? It is hard to press down on the rod because there is nothing to hold onto. Should I use a rod longer than I need and bend it so I can hold it?

The good news (I think) is that I was turning it the right direction.

You should put the rod in a vise. Yes you have to push down on it some
