I want to install a pitched overhang above the outside back door. How's the best way to attach it to the house so it doesn't come crashing down from the weight of snow, butterflies, etc. Thanks alot.

A hip style is probably the strongest shape, if you want something that is unsupported by gussets. The "ledgers", if you will, should be lag bolted to every stud they cross, so locating the studs would be important.

Have you considered supports?
It wouldn’t matter which type of roof you opted for if you included two upright supports to the outer edges - 4 x 4 posts should be sufficient. If you don’t like the idea of leaving the posts exposed why not go the whole hog and make the roof overhang into an enclosed porch feature?
If that seems like using a sledge to crack a nut you can always use the simpler device of supporting the overhanging roof with a couple of gallows brackets.
