My next door neighbor has an old solar panel on his roof. It's probably 25 years old but had been working fine until recently. It heats water that feeds a collection tank that feeds a water heater.

Recently the pump and thermostat went out. He's not able to replace them right away. The problem is that steaming hot water is spewing out the pressure relief valve during the day, and continues to drip steadily during the night. Though I like the sound of waterfalls near my bedroom window, this feature is losing its allure.

He was told by a plumber not to turn off the water to the panel- that doing this could cause serious damage. Does this make sense? Is there a safe way to shut the system down temporarily?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.
