Decorating and Design - Color blocks

I want to make color blocks on my ceiling in my basement. What is the easiest way of accomplishing this? Would I paint the entire wall white and block off where I want to add red and black? Is there a link or website that shows some different designs? Also, with "red" walls do you think this will look nice... the color scheme is red, black, and white. Red walls, black trim and a white wall (already white, will not paint) Thanx.

Basement walls are typically low and rooms with little light. Lighter color on walls & ceiling all same color give the illusion of greater space and height. Red and white blocks on ceiling would give a different look and highlight the color accents.

walls will be bright red and the ceilings are 6' 5"...

Whether painting stripes or blocks of color, you will need to mark your lines, run your painter's tape, and then paint, unless you have dropped ceilings where you paint the individual blocks. 6'5" ceilings are low. I know several people who would have to duck. Going with one red accent wall and painting the other three walls and ceiling the same color white would give you the illusion of greater height. I am afraid that by adding a block pattern to ceiling that it will make ceiling look even lower. Black could be added with painted furniture, artwork, accessories, wrought iron, black area rug. The red from the accent wall can also be splashed around the room in accessories.

the ceilings are only 6'5" high. that's really really low. that would be a negative thing. and that's what you're choosing to accentuate and highlight? plus, you've chosen 3 very bold and contrasting colors. in my opinion, this will not be a pleasant room to be in for very long.
