we have a wooden stairway with carpet on it and someone mentioned a hydraulic system for lifting the first section of the stairs upwards to act as storage space for that awkward area under the first stairs; i.e. you lift upwards and can reach under. I have googled the main idea but have come up with only a static system for under stairs with no lifting up device. The reason I want to do it this way is because the stairs are deep and getting things stuck in the far back would be inevitable. The wall skirting the understair area is very solid and I am hesitant to go and take out even just the lower triangle area and expose it to the hallway. The larger area is used as an under stair closet but the furthest end is fundamentally inaccessable. Any indications of where I could find plans for this project?

Are you talking about where spot lived on the Munsters?

We had a similar situation. We removed the back wall from the closet and made large wooden storage boxes on wheels which would roll back under the lower part of the stairway. Works great. Hope this helps. Good luck.
