We are putting in new kitchen cabinets (it is gutted right now) & was wondering if it would work out ok to put plywood the same thickness as the laminate flooring we are installing under the new cabinets to raise the heigth of the cabinets so that it would be easier to install the dishwasher (plywood under the dishwasher also). Also plywood under the cab. around the ref. so that when we put down the lamanate flooring under the ref. it will fit under the cabinet that is above the ref. After the cabinets are installed then lay down the laminate floor up to the cabinets leaving 1/4 in. for expansion then put down the quarter round or molding. Do you forsee any problems in doing it that way? Do you have any other ideas on what we could do? We are thinking that if we don't raise up the cabinets the height of the laminate floor we won't be able to get the dishwasher & ref. in or out also the stove will be higher sitting on the laminate floor compared to the counter on both sides.

Thank You!
Sarah

Although it's usually not that much extra flooring to install beneath cabinets, many opt to install plywood beneath cabinets to raise the floor to the same of flooring being installed in kitchens. Quarter round or shoe molding is installed to cover the expansion gap in front of cabinets. Flooring is, however, typically installed beneath refrigerator and dishwasher. If dishwasher legs are not adjustable some skip under the dishwasher so it will not get blocked in. Dishwashers are installed in between two cabinets or panels and floor beneath tends not to be visible. Refrigerators, however, usually have gaps on either side, even if installed between refrigerator end panels, and flooring can be visible. Most kitchen appliances have adjustable legs that allow of some raising or lowering of them to adjust to abutting countertops.

I am remodeling my kitchen also. Kitchen is gutted, and I already have the flooring. I am undecided as to whether I should install my new laminate flooring before or after the cabinets? Which is the best thing to do? The guys I got the flooring from say to do cabinets first, then flooring. I have heard flooring first, then cabinets. What to do, what to do.

Cabinets first - for a couple reasons. If the floor needs to be replaced or repaired is a big one. Putting the cabinet over the floor could inhibit expansion.

Thanks. I heard those exact reasons earlier today. I am glad because the cabinets are coming in the next week or 2, and I am still busy patching/painting walls and ceilings. Don't mind waiting to do the floor.
