I have a B&S 12hp IC engine in a 20 year old Statesman mower. I have nursed it for the past 6 years but last week it cut off on me in the middle of mowing grass. I fed it gas and starting fluid seperately and all I get is backfiring through the carb. Any ideas what the problem is? Has she mowed her last lawn?

I would try a spark plug right off, as a plug that is fouled will cause an engine to backfire quite often. If that does not take care of it then there is a possibility that you have a problem with the intake valve not seating or insufficient clearance.

The plug appears to be in good shape. I replaced it a month ago. I'll pick one up tomorrow anyway, can't hurt.
