I just bought a home and we're about to do some painting. I noticed however there are a few spots where you can see some previous sheetrock repair has been done, but has left a bump in the wall. To fix this before painting should I cut the area out and repair it again? Or is there a better way to do this? I'm new to this stuff so thanks for any advice.

Depends on the size of the "bump". If you coat the edges of the bump with drywall mud and feather it out 12 inches or so, it will usually disappear (to the eye, so to speak) - unless it is really bad.

I agree, floating the repair out over a larger area is usually the best/easiest way to fix it. Sometimes when the area is small but protruding you can gently knock it in and then remud the repair.

Cutting out the old repair should be the last resort.

Ok, thanks guys, I'll give it a try by smoothing it out with mud, and see how it goes!
