I just finished completely drywalling a room including the ceiling in my basement. Considering I'm fairly new to hanging drywall, I'm pretty happy with the results. There are some gaps due to the uneveness of the ceiling and floor. The largest gap is a hair less than 1/2" inch. I've been doing alot of research and my game plan is to mix some setting-type compound and fill in all of my unwanted gaps and once dry, use fiberglass tape overtop and continue like I would with all-purpose compound for the rest of the seams. Any input appreciated on this plan.

When I do a repair, and there exists a gap such as you indicate, I will roll up or stuff a lengthwise piece of the fiberglas tape in the gap and then place fast setting (20 min) compound over it. Somehow it seems to strengthen the strip of compound over the length of the crack. Also, with the 20 minute stuff, you can get on with business after lunch.

Often a 1/2" gap can be taped over with no problems. I would prefill it on walls but not on the ceiling. Paper tape has a better track record than the fiberglass sticky tape.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I guess what I'm really debating is which procedure I should really do. Should I tape over the gaps first, then mud with the setting compound, or should I stick with my original plan and fill first then tape after its dry? I like the idea of scrunching a strip of tape into the gap. I'm pretty set on fiberglass tape as I bought about 5 rolls of the stuff during a renovation sale at the hardware store. :o I'm not sure of the benefits/disadvantages of doing it the three ways stated so far.

1/2 inch?? Fill with joint compound and tape (with paper tape).... Take that sticky stuff back and get a refund...
