How can I get rid of the dried tile adhesive on my bathroom walls that was under the old tiles? Someone told me I could use tar paper over the walls and then paper over that but we want to paint.

If you won't be tiling again or it is a dry area, scrape off the glue (and consequently the top layer of the sheetrock) and skim coat the sheetrock with compound and sand it smooth. If you are installing tile, and it is a wet area, remove the sheetrock and replace with backerboard prior to applying the tile.
