Have an older house with 4" ceramic tile on the walls. Would like to install wainscoting where the tile is. Was thinking of simply sanding the tiles, then gluing the wainscoting to the tiles. Any thoughts on this. My first impression was to do it right and remove the tiles entirely. A friend suggested the gluing method. I am a bit unsure of it though, thinking it would put too much load on old tiles/old mortor, etc.

Welcome to the forums

I suppose glue might work but personally I think it would be better to remove the tile and then either install beadboard panels directly to the drywall [secured at studs] or install furring strips to attach the old tradional beadboard to.

The tile haa adhesive holding it to the wall and if you glue the beadboard to the tile and either adhesive fails
