Ok... My wife woke me up at 5:00 this morning, she was on the way out the door when she heard a noise coming from the Heat Pump and then a bunch of smoke, I told her to cut the thermostat off. Later on I removed the top side panel to check if the capacitor and defrost board were ok, everything looked fine no burnt marks or smell, so I am going to assume that the fan is the problem....How does one check to see if the fan is bad????
..........Any and all help greatly appreciated..........

Were you in heat mode at the time?? It may have went into defrost while she was walking out.

Have you attempted to run it again?

With MATT here . When the weather is just right and the unit goes into defrost mode . You for sure think the whole thing is on fire from the smoke "(steam)" comeing off it.

Being that it's a Goodman I would start by replacing the dual capacitor.

No.

It's the metal one withe the red and yellow wires on it. The blue also maybe now that I look at it again. It looks like it's wired as a start assist.

It's not a guaranteed fix but Goodmans are notorious for the caps going out.
