Gas and Oil Home Heating Furnaces - Oil furnace keeps going on and off in short intervals to heat 2nd floor

Just this year my furnace has been going on and off, often staying on for only maybe 10-20 seconds and staying off the same amount of time, repeatedly. When it's on is when I hear the water in my baseboard heaters upstairs. It does not do this for the heat on the first floor (it's zoned by floor). Everything heats up fine, but it didn't do this last year and the noise is annoying, not to mention it doesn't seem it should be doing this. I recently had my furnace cleaned if that is at all relevant.

Any ideas? Should I just call and have someone look at it?

If you can hear water running in the pipes, you have air in there with the water. You need to get the air out. When you do, the short cycling will likely go away.

I've never heard that before - we have always heard the water run through the pipes. Maybe it was always wrong! But last year we did have a friend of the family plumber do a lot of stuff with our heating because it was messed up and I believe he did that - relieved the air from the pipes. Now, I just have to figure out how to do that......

Might look at the baseboard and see if you have any small bleeders that you can let the air out.
