I own a rent house. My first and only tenant just moved out. I have never had to light the pilot on the furnace or fill the oil tank. My questions: Can I light the pilot or do I need a furnace person? Do I need to do anything special to the tank before filling? The tank has been empty since last spring.

If you have an oil fired furnace, there is no pilot. The oil is ignited by a set of high voltage electrodes.
If your tank is empty the line may need to be purged and possibly blown out.

Id call a oil tech to go over it . Be there when he comes let him show you about what you can do to it and what best to call him. They should be serviced every year.
