The home I am in the process of buying has T1-11 interior walls. Any ideas on what to do with them? I was wondering if anyone else out there has seen something similar and what their solution was. They are kind of nice, gives the house a rustic feel (which I like), kind of like going into a Cracker Barrell. I don't really want to paint the walls but I have considered staining or maybe a polyurethane coating??? The home does have some regular walls that I plan to paint in colors that will help lighten the rooms and add some cozy warmth (the wood walls make it a bit on the dark side). Plus we plan on laying a nice earth toned ceramic tile, which will also help lightening the place up.
Thanks!

geez get rid of it and put up sheetrock. Rustic look or not t1-11 is the cheepest plywood out on the market. i could never feel comf. with it inside the house.

It's an exterior siding. T1-11 is a the patern of the siding, not a brand.

Orginally it was a spec for a type of plywood siding with vertical groves (avaialbe in several different spacings, but 8" oc is most common).

But now there are many different types of siding made in t1-11 paterns.

Plywood, fiber cement, and even vinyl.

They are sheets that run from the ceiling all the way down to the floor. The living room has a very tall cathedral ceiling while the rest of the house has 10' ceilings (my guess).

T-111 is plywood [usually 5/8" thick] with grooves every 4"-6" It is normally used as exterior siding.

It can be varnished/poly or painted, Because of it's rough sawn texture it would be hard to stain compared to most interior woods.

if you rubbed up against it, would you get splinters? :o

Unfortunatly, yes. But again, I like the look enough to not want to paint...not just yet anyway. I think with the right colors on the "accent" walls, along with the right draperies, furnishing and accessories, it will look very nice.

A couple of coats of poly will lessen the chance of getting splinters.

I don't have much experience of T1-11, I can suggest the best way to paint and design the interior of your new home is to make sure the color won't contrast the draperies and also the furnitures you'll be putting in. You must know what theme of colors will be or the kind of furnitures you plan..Ask an Interior Designer in that way you can get ideas what the right thing to put in.
