I have a 1986 Magic Chef furnace. The pilot light ignites OK, but the burner will only (sometimes) ignite after I take the furnace cover off. I appreciate any ideas on what I need to look for.

When was the last time you had a complete cleaning done on this?

Make sure there is no loose wires.

It has not been cleaned for 6 years. I did find a loose wire from the pressure switch to the thermostat. This has fixed it so far. What do you sugest for a complete cleaning? Thanks.

I'd suggest get a cleaning done.

-Cleaning of heat exchanger, and burners.

-Cleaning of blower cage, change filters.

-Check of temp rise.

-Check of safety and limits control.

-Check of gas pressure.

-Clean drainage hose/pipe.

-Make sure all pipes are good shape for exhaust.

I wanted to share my recent experience with this same year furnace. Mine too is also a 1986 Magic Chef, forced air, furnace. The igniter died and I could not even get it to go when pressing the override switch. My service guy came out and replaced the igniter with a Beckett transformer and updated all the contacts. It works like a charm now. It has also been my experience that with this burner you really need to get it serviced once a year. I've had previous issues with the nozzles getting gummed up.

I would like to add "complete combustion analysis" to Jay's list. Carbon monoxide is of utmost importance, particularly with gas fired equipment.
